Heather McDermott

Heather studied at Edinburgh College of Art where she gained a BA (Hons) in Design and Applied Arts, followed by an MA in Jewellery. She has been running a jewellery business for the past 10 years and works from a workshop in the Hidden Lane in Glasgow.

Inspired by the ever-changing shoreline of her island home, the Isle of Skye, Heather creates sculptural yet wearable jewellery. She has always used literal sources for reference; fishing nets, creels along the shore etc., however, this is translated in a contemporary way through jewellery and sculpture. Her sculptural style is highlighted with the use of mixed materials including stainless steel and silver.

McDermott previously participated in a residency at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden which introduced the potential of working on a large scale. As a member of GSS McDermott is re-visiting these larger-scale ideas and developing those ideas into future projects.
