CHANNELS
CHANNELS
Channels is our dedicated personal development programme that provides alternative pathways to accessing the resources of GSS for our partners and participants in our Learning & Engagement Programme. Channels offers a variety of access points for both groups and individuals through our Community Studio and Mentoring programmes.
COMMUNITY STUDIO
Through our Community Studio we deliver artist-led workshops for charities and grassroots organisations working in North Glasgow. These workshops aim to build on each group’s unique perspective, talents, skills, supporting them to try new things and to make work in ways that they might not have had access to previously.
In order to address the lack of free, available spaces in our local area, we also offer our Community Studio as a bookable space for our Community Partners and participants to develop and run their own projects, workshops, and initiatives.
Through our Community Studio we have worked with; Maryhill Integration Network, Ubuntu Womens Shelter, The Prince’s Trust, Widening Participation at Glasgow School of Art, The Red Cross’s Chrysalis Group, SISCO, SiMY, Art in the City, and Young Saheliya.
If you are a charity working in North Glasgow and would like to explore how we could work together, please get in touch!
MENTORING
Our Mentoring Programme offers bespoke one-to-one support from GSS Staff and Members for individual artists living in North Glasgow who face intersecting barriers to developing and sustaining their own creative practice and who have not been afforded the opportunity to pursue their practice via traditional routes.
We work closely with each mentee to build a programme of activities that responds to their needs and ambitions, introducing them to GSS’ networks to establish their own community of practice. We operate on a referral basis—you can self-refer or be referred through one of our Community Groups. Follow the link below if you’d like to learn more!
CURRENT PARTICIPANTS
Martin McCreadie is a multidisciplinary artist and writer based in Glasgow, working primarily in sculpture, song-writing, and narrative fiction. Martin is the self-described ‘pioneer’ of our mentoring programme. GSS and Martin have been working together since 2022 and in this time we’ve seen his confidence sky-rocket—Martin has built relationships with the entire team at GSS, is a mainstay in our wood workshop, contributed works to Beyond the Forbidden Gate (our major commission for Glasgow International 2024) and has participated in GSS membership community events including crits, open-studios, and participating in selection panels for our residency programmes.
We’re grateful to Martin’s trust, dedication, and desire to learn alongside us as our Mentoring Programme finds its form and we’re excited to continue working with Martin throughout our next Programme to begin recruiting and opening up the process to other mentees from our local communities.
