Reading into Objects – Interactive Sculpture with Jennifer Sykes

Wednesdays | 1800 – 2030

1st & 8th May

The introduction of accessible, creative-coding software for Artists and Designers has opened up new pathways for making work. Low cost sensors enable us to augment existing objects, exploring new creative possibilities. This course aims to introduce participants to simple, easy to use sensors such as light and movement to embed in existing objects bringing them to life in new exciting ways.

Reading Into Objects is part of a series of courses designed to give an introduction to making interactive artworks. Other courses in this programme include:

Making Things Move

Conductive Screen-Printing

Motion Triggers

You can book onto each course in the programme if you’re looking for a more comprehensive overview or you can pick and choose the sessions that sound most interesting to you! If you have any questions please do get in touch with us!

Jen Sykes is a Glasgow based visual artist working with analog technology, computer code andelectronics. She graduated from Goldsmiths University’s Computational Arts MFA in 2014 and is an alumni of the Glasgow School of Art Environmental Art department.

Jen Sykes creates electrical hardware and interactive installations exploring logic, machine learning and how our relationship to materials changes with the addition of computation. Her current research into biometric sensors and machine learning concepts has previously led her to develop her own hardware in the form of mechanomyography sensors, reflecting realtime changes of performer’s bodies by translating muscular oscillation into the mechanics of analog film technology.

Alongside her practice Jen teaches Interactive Prototyping at the Glasgow School of Art and is regularly commissioned to produce technical elements for other artists and designers. Recent works and commissions include BBC Listening Benches (2016-17), Glasgow Doors Open Days and RapidMix research at eNTERFACE 2017.
