Unlocking The Story is a project which uncovers, explores and celebrates the social and industrial history of Glasgow’s canals and is initiated by Scottish Waterways Trust. These canals are steeped in rich heritage, and have played a defining role for the communities of North Glasgow from their industrial heyday through to the current renaissance led through the Glasgow Canal Regeneration Project.

As part of a new public art commission which sits as a key element of the Unlocking the Story programme, Glasgow Sculpture Studios is delivering a series of public and local community group workshops exploring ideas for potential new art work to sit here alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal. To date with have worked with a variety of groups across North Glasgow and city wide, working with both Glasgow Sculpture Studios artists and the shortlisted artists for the commission to date, the studios have explored the canal through screen printing, creative walking trails, photography, boat building, natural clay moulding, drop in local health centre sculpture workshops and artist talks. We also use the Creative Cargo barge on occasion as an alternative space for our workshops to develop!

We will be embarking on the second stage of our public engagement programme in the New Year so please keep an eye on the website for more opportunities coming your way.
