Built upon methodical research and extensive fieldwork, Sybren Renema‘s multimedial practice engage playfully and critically with literary and historical sources. Recent work has interrogated regimes of knowledge production and the narrative content of objects in the overlapping fields of travel writing, poetry, empire, exploration and music. Veering between the utopian non-places of hallucination and the ‘blank spaces’ of the inhospitable Antarctic, recent solo shows have scrutinized the legacies of Romantic wanderers, addicts, and poets.
